The Minister of Education and Science and the Ambassador of Germany to Ukraine are Speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the 3rd Module

This weekend, Kyiv is hosting an educational module of STEM is FEM project on Energy and Ecology. Among the speakers that are to deliver the opening speech in front of senior students from all over Ukraine are Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Hanna Novosad, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Ukraine Anka Feldhusen, Deputy Head of UNICEF Office in Ukraine Laura Bill, Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Protection of Ukraine Iryna Stavchuk and others.

STEM is FEM educational initiative that aims to motivate Ukrainian schoolchildren to choose specialties related to the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. In this way, the organizers are willing to change gender imbalance in these fields in the future and increase their overall popularity among young people.

To this end, the project conducts two-day educational modules on a wide variety of technological fields. During these events, girls get a unique opportunity to hear from profile industry women and also participate in the competition. This time, the organizers invited Natalia Kolomietz, UNICEF Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Specialist, Yuliya Makliuk, Eco management Consultant, Olexandra Gumeniuk, Director of European-Ukrainian Energy Agency, and Oksana Gutsalenko, Sustainable Development Popularizer.

Natalia Kolomietz said,

“In nature, everything is intertwined. Traditionally, energy production relied on coal, gas and nuclear power. This led to water and air pollution, emissions into the atmosphere, and now we have to combat climate change. It is worth considering everything in a complex so that the development in one direction does not lead to devastating consequences for the environment. Personally, I would like to see a significant increase in the use of renewable energy in Ukraine’s green and energy sector.”

“Today is the time when the environment and energy are viewed in a comprehensive way, as the coal-fired energy generation has a direct negative impact on air quality and also provokes climate change. Taking into account the recently announced EU Green Agreement Policy, the energy generation should reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the region. So, the development of clean energy technologies is a priority of global energy and ecology trends. I would like to see waste-free production, circular economic development, electricity generation with zero ecology damage and to keep soil, water, and air clean and accessible to each and every inhabitant of the planet in the nearest future,” added Oleksandra Gumeniuk, Director of European-Ukrainian Energy Agency.

The girls also will have excursions to the establishments from the environmental and energy spheres, namely to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute and the Central Dispatching Service of Kyiv Electric Networks.

For participating in the module, the schoolchildren were selected via online testing. Top 30 participants from all over Ukraine were invited to attend the educational module in Kyiv. The module will also include a competition part, the main prize of which is participation in the Yale International Alliance Conference on Global Citizenship in Rome (Italy), organized by Yale University.
